Are Universities promoting public drinking?

University can be over whelming especially in times of  tests and assignments, and having time to have a beer or two with friends is a need, Campus Pubs can be the right place to do just that without worrying about driving home or being robbed on your way home. Students feel that having a bar/pub is a good idea because it is a place where you get to meet other students, relax  and also promotes safe drinking but in my opinion  there is no safe or responsible drinking when there is alcohol involved because they will always be that person who will miss behave.

Having a pub on campus can be a very contradicting issue because it goes against University principles and parents send students to Universities in order for them to get educated  and not to promote alcohol abuse, this could have a bad image/reputation for the University if parents knew that students had access to alcohol on campus.

These are the disadvantages of having Pubs on campus

  • Disrespecting lecturers
  • Poor attendance leading to F7
  • Vandalising school property when drunk
  • Student death relating to alcohol-stabbing, fighting and shooting
  • Unplanned pregnancy from unprotected sex

It is a known fact that students will get hold of alcohol one way or the other but it would have been better if it was not campus.

  1. Well when you are in University you must know that what you do and say is your responsibility, being at the BAR is a choice wise students will manage their time well and prioritise betwwen studies & funny. I dont think this will promote alcohol but being responsible.

  2. getting out of High school and starting a new life at university can be fun and stressing. university life has a lot of challenges thus some students end up getting F7s. as an individual you must know what you want and also remember that what ever you do will catch up with you in future. intelligent and wise students sometimes do drink but they know when to stop.

  5. For me its a contradiction totally but its not a bad thing having to go out and chill with a couple of friends. Its up to a person if education or drinking comes first...you need to be morally disciplined thats it.

  6. when one reaches tertiary level he or she is old enough to make his or her own decisions and is able to see the difference between right and wrong therefore you shouldnt make decisions that will affect the people around you

  7. For me i think they promoting alcohol to students especially those who are irresponsible for their future but it is not a must for you to drink alcohol. It is advisable for those students who engaged themselves to alcohol to know that education comes first.

  8. What a valid point! Universities should be assisting the state towards promoting a less alcoholic environment for YOUNG people! Instead; this is exactly where you find alcohol stalls. It is known that the youth can be irresponsible at times and instead of helping the situation, it is being provoked and in the end an excellent result for the school's pass percentage is expected?

  10. all the alcoholic drinks always state not for people under the age of 18,from my knowledge varsity students are over the age of 18 and the fact that these people well most of them are now living on their own it clearly states that their responsible enough we cannot blame the varsity

  11. What difference does it make whether alcohol is sold on campus or not? From my understanding, Varsity's sole purpose is to provide a safe and rsponsible environment for students to enjoy their social life and also get a qualification. The issue is a controversial and national one, id kids are drinking in high school they sure will in Varsity, and their adult life. Drinking is a choice
