In a PR perspective for an organisation to be successful it depends on both the internal and external stakeholders, with all the bad publicity that the University of Johannesburg (UJ) has been getting this year one may wonder if such publicity is good publicity?
I recently read an article in the May issue of UJ Observer about how the "DFC ANCYL( African National Congress Youth League) slams UJ" and we should bare in mind that the ANCYL can be influential to lots of people due to its platform . To me this article frames UJ in a negative way which I do not think UJ needs right now, since its going to be hosting an Open Day on the 11th and 12 May 2012. Through all this bad publicity it is amazing how floods of applications are still flaking in, which takes me back to my question of is any publicity good publicity or is it a matter of students are hungry for education or is it maybe they do not have place to go?

power of media can make or break an organisation < source: http://www.theresearchpedia.com/ > |
With all this bad publicity in just a year, first it was the incident of the parent who died during the stamped, then the girl who was found dead at Res and now this. UJ needs a good Public Relations Practitioner that will do the damage control and hopefully the Open Day will be a success and change external stakeholders (potential students, parents and different organisations) perceptions about UJ and I personally think UJ has alot to offer.

when newspapers write about the same issue, it changes people behaviour and perceptions about that issue. <source: http://www.researchpedia.com/ > |
i think UJ has proactive PR, looking all the bad publicity recieved during the dead of one fellow students and secondly the issue of getting one student dead on res, the PRP has able to give media a suitable message across, look the flooding of applications even though has under gone through bad publicity
ReplyDeletetrue trot thats what i liked about UJ because insted of keeping quite they responded and they ddnt blame the people involved but they took accountability and took an action plan on how to prevent that from happenning again.
DeleteWell I think that it will take a lot of things for the UJ name to go down that easily...I UJ is one of the most accomodating institutions any one can find in South Africa. The fees are reasonable, multiple courses and caters for certificates, diplomas and degrees so for me any publicity for UJ is good publicity and they really managed well to accomodate the crises that it faced at the beginning of the year. I say long live UJ.
ReplyDeleteyes it would take a very ;ong time but i think if this keeps on happening UJ will be last resort for students, the other thing is that people are desparete for education
DeleteI think that the incident that toke place at the being of the year might have given uj a bad image but the really fact is that it keep on having more applications each and every year because it is the most affordable institute with multiplule courses and everyone ones to be at uj.
ReplyDeletei think the problem was that they accepted lots of applications in de begging of the year and that they should be strict on about the number of late applicants. this publicity might have not affected the image of uj but parents may start to wonder about the safety of their kids especially those that come from places away from school
DeleteThe university of johannesburg is really in big trouble regarding their image as every student wants to see themselves in it which ends up being a big trouble for them to sustain the crowd of learners. i think its going to be better this year as the open day is also going to take two days instead of the ussual one day.
ReplyDeletei think UJ should be strict on how they handle application, yes students might be hungry for education but if they dont apply in time they might as well come back the following year and applay early
DeleteI can tell the opening day will be a successful one it will heal previous histories.Good publicity is one which covers newsworthiness, and for UJ is a very big organisation and almost everyones favourite- student do not mind bad incidence occuring here they just exiceted that they are at varsity.
ReplyDeletei gree with you themba, but i suggest that they do crowd control, they could make sure that they have enough marshals that will hadle the crowd to avoid stampeid
